Welcome to The World of Daniel Lord!

Daniel Lord, S.J.
Daniel Lord, S.J. (1888-1955)

Daniel Lord was one of the most influential American Catholic religious figures.  He wrote 30 books and 230 pamphlets.  His pamphlets sold over 25 million copies.  One of the most prolific Catholic writers, his weekly column Along the Way was syndicated in Catholic newspapers across the country.  He made hundreds of radio broadcasts.  Lord creatively used all the media of his time to spread his message of faith and how to live a good and happy life.

Daniel Lord served as National Director for the Sodality movement.  Sodalities were clubs at Catholic schools and parishes to encourage faith.  At their peak there were 13,000 Sodalities in America.  He created the popular Summer School of Catholic Action; a week-long conference for students, lay people, sisters, priests, and brothers.  The SSCA would last into the 1960s.

Daniel Lord was a popular lecturer and speaker, constantly traveling across the country.  He helped the famous movie producer Cecil B. DeMille make a movie about Jesus.  Lord even wrote the Papal encyclical on the movies, Vigilanti Cura.  Lord loved theater and wrote seventy plays, musicals, and pageants.  He produced many of them, including shows with casts of over a 1,000 performers!

Very likely, Daniel Lord, in his thirty-year career, had more impact on the lives of ordinary Catholics than any other religious figure.  His life story and countless writings provide a unique window into the American Catholic world of the 1920s into the 1950s.
